Award Ceremony for the “2025 Biodiversity Space Exposed Seeds Nursery Project”

Award Ceremony for the “2025 Biodiversity Space Exposed Seeds Nursery Project” Successfully Concluded
Beijing – Hong Kong – Macau Celebrate “World Space Week” Together, witnessing the signing of the Space Seeds Cooperation Agreement

The award ceremony for the “2025 Biodiversity Space Exposed Seeds Nursery Project,” organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development, was successfully held on October 4, 2025. Coinciding with the first day of the United Nations “World Space Week,” the event not only marked a significant collaboration in aerospace science education between Beijing and Hong Kong, but also celebrated the learning achievements of nearly 300 students from 30 primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong and Macau over the past six months in biodiversity and space exposed seeds planting.

Responding to World Space Week, Cultivating Students’ Spirit of Space Exploration

In her opening remarks, Professor Karen Cheung, Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development and President of the UNESCO Hong Kong Association, reflected on the significance of World Space Week in establishing an international framework for the peaceful use of outer space. She emphasized that Space Week reminds us that space technology is not only a window to exploring the universe but also a vital force driving educational innovation, food security, and sustainable development. This project uniquely integrates space technology with biodiversity, complementing the cultivation of cross-disciplinary competencies in Education for Sustainable Development.

Triple Educational Value, Nurturing Future Leaders

The Honourable CHU Kwok-keung, Member of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, delivered an officiating remark. Mr. Chu praised the project’s three core educational values, describing it as a comprehensive practical lesson in ‘interdisciplinary learning,’ where students took on the roles of ‘space engineers,’ ‘agricultural scientists,’ and ‘environmental explorers.’ It was also an immersive cultivation of ‘scientific literacy,’ allowing students to experience the process of asking questions, observing and recording, and hypothesis testing in a scientific manner. Furthermore, it widens the horizon for future leaders, guiding students to contemplate how to use cutting-edge technology to find innovative solutions for challenges facing our planet.

Integration of Seeds Cultivation, Scientific Research, and Sustainability

Mr. MA Wai-chung, Assistant Director (Agriculture) of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (AFCD), attended and addressed the officiating remarks of the ceremony. He stated that the project not only honed students’ seeds cultivation skills but also ignited their passion for scientific inquiry, complementing various initiatives promoted by the AFCD. He expressed his hope that students would take active leadership in advancing the nation’s progress in agriculture science, aerospace technology, and sustainable development in the future.

Milestone in Beijing-Hong Kong Cooperation: Seeds Set to Soar into Space

To further expand the “Biodiversity Space Exposed Seeds Nursery Project,” a signing ceremony for the “Beijing-Hong Kong Youth Space Breeding and Flight Cooperation Agreement” was held witnessed by guests, teachers, and students. Professor Karen Cheung, Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development, and Mr. LIU Lei, General Manager of Shenzhou Lupeng Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. signed the cooperation agreement, signifying the deepening of aerospace science education collaboration between Beijing and Hong Kong. Seeds nominated by the students will be submitted to Chinese aerospace authorities for evaluation, giving them the opportunity to be carried into space.

Six Months of Cultivation, Blossoming into Scientific Achievement

Since its launch on April 12, “World Space Day,” the project, after six months of careful cultivation, has yielded fruitful results. During the presentation session by outstanding teams from the Space Seeds Cultivation Experience Competition, students from primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary showcased their engaging research processes and insights. The on-site presentations were judged by a panel including Professor Karen Cheung; Mr. CHEUNG Pak Yin, Calvin, Agricultural Officer (Horticulture) of the Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department; and Professor Hon-Ming Lam, Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong School of Life Sciences and Person in Charge of the Hong Kong Seed Technology and Education Centre.

In the exhibition area, nine schools have set up display boards, showing guests, teachers, and students pictures and data from their cultivation processes. These displays resembled a miniature science museum, embodying the hard work and dedication of the students over the past six months.

Award Ceremony: A Moment of Glory

During the grand award presentation, in addition to presenting awards for various categories of the Space-Exposed Seeds Nomination Competition and the Space Seeds Cultivation Experience Competition. All participating schools were also presented with a certificate of appreciation, encouraging them to continue promoting biodiversity and space exposed seeds activities. The ceremony concluded successfully in a warm atmosphere of exchange and sharing. The HiESD sincerely thanks the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of the HKSAR Government, the UNESCO Hong Kong Association, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Faculty of Education Alumni Association, The Education University of Hong Kong Alumni Association, The State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology, and the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers for their support of the project.

The HiESD will continue to organize sharing sessions and online expert talks for the participating schools and will commence a new chapter next April. For details, please visit the Institute’s website: https://hiesd.org/wp/hk/spaceseeds2025/
